I also am failing to remember the giant floating space baby pictured on the cover, but perhaps I just have a poor memory.

The space baby/fetus occurs at the very end, when the astronaut encounters the monolith and goes through the psychedelic lightshow trip, then appears in different stages of life, starting very old and ending up Benjamin-Button-like as the baby.
